Marian Assembly #1833 under the direction of Sir Knight C. Robert Evans began a new project during the cold of winter. Rensselaer is the county seat of Jasper County located in northwest Indiana. With a population of approximately 5500, there are an amazing number of flags displayed throughout the year. It was decided to honor those who display their flag on a more permanent basis.
All members were sent a letter and asked to find home, business, organization, or governmental agency flying the United States Flag on a regular basis. A list was compiled to eliminate duplicate names. A subcommittee of Bob Evans, Joe Lane and Harvey Wood then started an inspection process to make sure all flags were in good condition. Torn, tattered, or faded flags were eliminated from consideration. Once the list was checked the second time, there were 126 who were eligible to receive the award.
A certificate was then designed. A place for names and addresses was available for individualization. The certificate was then placed in a frame for hanging.
On June 14, Flag Day members of Marian Assembly met with Rensselaer’s Mayor Herb Arihood to start the distribution process.
We were fortunate to receive some publicity from the local paper. The articles are included. The certificates have been distributed through the diligent efforts of several members.
